This pre-concert talk for Legong – Music and Dance of the Balinese Gamelan, led by Gamelan Barasvara, will introduce the audience to the main characteristics of the gamelan, the relationship between dance and music, the uses and functions of some of the most representative forms of these musical and dance traditions, both within and beyond their original context in Indonesia, and their contemporary significance for practitioners.
The discussion will feature the participation of two renowned Balinese dancers, Anak Agung Bagus Harjunanthara and Eka Santi Dewi, alongside Nyoman Hardiani Dewi, a member of Gamelan Barasvara.
The talk will be moderated by ethnomusicologist Dr. Kendra Stepputat, director of the Institute of Ethnomusicology at Kunst Graz University and a specialist in gamelan music.

Anak Agung Bagus Harjunanthara
A dancer, choreographer, and teacher, he graduated in Performing Arts from the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) in Denpasar. He has received multiple awards in traditional dance and has represented Indonesia at international events. Currently, he leads the Arjuna Production Art Community in Bali.
Eka Santi Dewi
A dancer and teacher, she trained in Bali and has taught hundreds of students throughout her career. In 2003, she won the gold medal at the prestigious Denpasar Arts Festival. Since 2011, she has been based in Antwerp, where she continues to promote Balinese dance in Europe.
Nyoman Hardiani Dewi
Originally from Bali, she has lived in Barcelona for 12 years and has been actively participating in the Balinese gamelan for the past two years, playing and dancing while also serving as a cultural reference within the group.
Kendra Stepputat, moderadora
An ethnomusicologist specializing in Balinese performing arts. She has lived and studied in Bali (Indonesia), where she learned to play the gamelan and dance. She is currently researching the field of choreomusicology. She is an associate professor and head of the Institute of Ethnomusicology at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz (KUG).
