Barcelona aims to be the first European Capital of Democracy after a jury of experts from the ECoD, a network for strengthening deliberative and participatory democracy in Europe, designated it as a joint finalist with Braga and Brussels.
Having visited Barcelona this 3 November, the jury was able to find out at first hand about the projects being carried out in the city, such as the Decidim free software platform, the Canòdrom, participatory budgets and deliberative assemblies by draw.
The Councillor for Citizenship Rights and Participation, Marc Serra, has highlighted how the European Capital of Democracy “can be an opportunity for discovering Barcelona’s participation model, recognising the central role that citizens play in these policies and continuing to make progress in democratic innovations and citizen involvement in the matters that affect them on a daily basis”.
