Get to know all participants of this year's edition

Decidim Fest 22 – The Future of the Internet is already on the horizon; on the 13th and 14th of October we are waiting for you at the Canòdrom in Barcelona. For this edition we will have:

A table of cities to address the use of Decidim and the democratic city, where representatives of the city councils of Kakogawa, Brussels, New York and Barcelona will share their experiences with Decidim, their different models of participation and the challenges they identify for the future. With Yasuhiro Okada (Mayor of Kakogawa), Arnaud Pinxteren (Councillor for Citizen Participation in Brussels), Sarah Sayeed (President and Executive Director of the NYC Civic Engagement Commission), and Marc Serra (Councillor for Citizenship Rights and Participation of Barcelona City Council).

The regulation of the Internet as a battlefield will be addressed in a conversation between Simona Levi, founder of Xnet, with Jill Toh from the Racism and Technology Center and Andrea G. Rodríguez from the European Policy Centre. What are the main battles taking place in Brussels in the processes of digital policy regulation? What is the role of the big tech companies in the regulatory processes and what are governments doing at the national level?

Adriana Groh, with years of experience working on digital participation and open technologies, is the director of the Sovereign Tech Fund, a new programme of the German Ministry of Economics and Climate to invest in open digital infrastructures. Together with open source lawyer and one of the founders of the Silo project, Malcolm Bain, she will talk about sustainability for the future of democratic technologies.

Carl T. Bergstrom, professor of biology at the University of Washington, and a specialist in information, will address the phenomenon of the spread of disinformation on social networks. At Decidim Fest, he will talk to us about what we can do about it, and other ideas that he brings together in his recently published book “Calling Bullshit”, co-written with Jevin D.West.

Ben Tarnoff (USA) is a tech worker, writer and co-founder of Logic Magazine, a technology and society magazine. He has just published “Internet for the People. The Fight for Our Digital Future” (2022), where he explores why the Internet is broken, and what could make it better; what strategies governments are pursuing to stop this privatisation and concentration of power through big tech, and how to address the challenges of the future of the Internet from a democratic perspective.
