The strategy to guarantee gender equity in the city got under way in 2015 and is applied across the whole of the City Council’s organisation and in all municipal policies.
Gender mainstreaming builds the gender perspective into all spheres of politics and society, focusing on the differentiated and unequal reality of men and women and designing measures which adapt to and respond to it. It acts as a method for reducing the gender inequalities which persist in our cities, making them fairer, more liveable and feminist.
Municipal accomplishments
- Since 2016: 130 gender impact reports compiled. 84.7% of this year’s budget analysed (€1.1 M) is transformational in inequalities and nearly 50% is regarded as positively transformational.
- Since 2016: over 6,300 people have gained some type of skill in gender matters in the City Council.
- Between 2017 and 2021: 1,517 gender clauses built into municipal procurement.
- 2019: gender equity regulations come into force at Barcelona City Council.
- 2021: some 69% of participatory processes include the gender perspective (compared to 3% in 2017).
- 2022: approval for a Mayoral Decree for gender mainstreaming units (UTG) and the obligation to create 40 of them. At present, 38 have been created and there are 51 active reference figures in all areas, districts and autonomous bodies, as well as municipal companies and public business organisations.
