Drink and drug driving checks
From Friday, 12 December, the Guàrdia Urbana will conduct round-the-clock checks for drink and drug driving across the city, with the aim of reducing accidents and casualties.
The campaign aims to reduce road casualties, both in terms of accidents and the number of people injured or killed. Its focus is on spotting and stopping as many drivers as possible who test positive and taking the necessary corrective action.
Preventative checks are one of the most effective ways of keeping drivers who are at risk of having an accident off the roads.
The enforcement priority is drivers who are over the legal alcohol limit, those under the influence of drugs, anyone who refuses to take mandatory detection tests, and all other behaviours that create dangerous situations.
The Road Safety Strategy 2030 aims to reduce the number of road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 50% between 2020 and 2030, with the ultimate goal of achieving zero road deaths nationwide by 2050 (targets shared with the UN and the European Union).
In Barcelona, improving road safety is one of the key strategic pillars of the Urban Mobility Plan (PMU) 2025–2030, while reducing casualties is one of the objectives of the Local Road Safety Plan (PLSV) 2025–2030.
