Firefighters and the City Police take part in a drill at a Barcelona shopping centre
During the early hours of 15 October, the Barcelona Fire Service and the City Police had significant roles in the drill to simulate a terrorist attack in a shopping centre in the city, organised by Civil Protection, the Mossos d’Esquadra corps and the company that manages the centre.
The exercise simulated a terrorist attack with multiple victims, putting to the test action protocols and the shopping centre’s self-protection plan. Over 250 people took part, including officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra police corps, Civil Protection, the Fire Service, the City Police, the SEM, the CUESB and staff at the shopping centre.
The City Police took part with two full teams from the Emergency and Proximity Reinforcement Unit, actively collaborating to locate and neutralise the aggressors. Officers from the Sant Martí Territorial Unit also took part, tasked with managing the traffic in the affected area.
As for the Barcelona Fire Service, the corps was present at the coordination centre of the City Council’s Service for Civil Protection, Prevention, Fire Extinction and Rescue. An ambulance operated by the corps was also mobilised at the scene of the exercise.
The drill included the collaboration of training centres and organisations such as the Red Cross, which provided logistical and psycho-social support. The exercise helped to improve the response capacity for incidents affecting multiple people and the support system for victims, and to strengthen communication between all stakeholders involved.
