New City Police campaign to improve the safety of school transport

The week-long campaign will check that school transport complies with safety requirements and all the other administrative obligations regulating this activity. The goal is to reduce involvement in traffic accidents, cutting the number of accidents and victims alike.

Checks will be made on all types of transport used to get pupils to and from school, such as coaches and minibuses. The operation will focus on times when pupils arrive at and leave schools, from 8 am to 9.30 am and from 3.30 pm to 6 pm. While the campaign will focus on areas around schools, the operation will be conducted around all the roads in the city.

The campaign will mainly focus on infringements relating to the following

  • Administrative conditions for vehicles: specific operating permits for school transport, licences held by drivers, mandatory insurance policies etc.
  • Service provision conditions: correct occupancy, time spent driving and resting, presence of another person when obligatory (with the right profile) etc.
  • Technical conditions for vehicles: technical inspections, state of emergency equipment, safety belts, condition of tyres, reverse warning alarm, screens and other elements.

With these types of vehicles, minors should always have their own seat, each with a seatbelt, and passengers over the age of three and up to 135 cm tall must also wear a seatbelt or similar safety system installed on the seat of the vehicle.
