New campaign to combat drink-driving and drug-driving
The City Police are launching a citywide campaign to combat drink-driving and drug-driving. The operation will be in place until 20 December and forms part of the local road safety plan.
Enforcement action will focus on offences linked to driving over the legal limit or with drugs in drivers’ systems, as well as all other conduct posing road safety risks.
The campaign is part of the special operation for Christmas, the main goals being to work for people’s personal safety and for road safety, ensure coexistence and inspect busy venues, focusing on inconvenience from noise, compliance with maximum capacities and closing times, plus alcohol consumption among minors. With the number of patrols on foot stepped up, the police corps will be working to minimise incidents over the festive period.
Drink-driving and drug-driving represent risk factors in terms of accidents, and prevention checks are one of the most efficient ways of avoiding the circulation of drivers posing an accident risk.
As set out in the Road Safety Strategy 2030, the goal is to halve the number of fatalities and severely injured by this date, with a view to reaching zero deaths by 2050.
