The Fire Service adds new resources for its services at the port

The Barcelona Fire Service has added a new vehicle to its fleet and boosted its technical resources thanks to the transfer of equipment from Port de Barcelona, under the collaboration agreement signed by the two in 1995 and which has helped provide a better service to citizens.

The vehicle in question is a multi-elevating crane with three mechanisms for moving cargo.

  • A crane with a capacity to lift 1,000 kilogrammes from 20 metres away.
  • A multi-elevation system for boxes and containers, designed to load and unload containers weighing up to 8,500 kilogrammes
  • A capstan of up to 20 tonnes

Besides this vehicle, the port has also invested over 600,000 euros in a hosepipe carrying container with an automatic reeling system and 40 six-inch-wide hosepipes of 50 metres in length. These have been transferred to the Barcelona Fire Service.

The agreements signed and still in force are for prevention purposes, ensuring that in the case of an accident at the port the Barcelona Fire Service would be able to provide a swift and effective response, guaranteeing the safety of workers and visitors and enabling port activity to return to normal in a matter of a few hours. In exchange, Port de Barcelona makes new firefighting vehicles and equipment available to the Fire Service.

The Barcelona Fire Service provides services in Port de Barcelona some 600 times a year on average. Most tasks are to guarantee safety when handling goods, particularly dangerous types, and checking fire protection resources which are the responsibility of the port. The service also carries out 25 fire drills a year, in the terminals, at port companies and in the port area in general.
