Learning languages

At libraries you can learn a language at your own pace. There are all kinds of resources for helping you to learn everything from Catalan and Spanish to German, English, Arabic, Basque, French, Italian, Russian and Chinese among others.

These materials are ordered according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Language.

- Learn : you will find resources for people wanting to learn a language from scratch and those who want to improve their knowledge.

- Read : if you want to read, you will find novels in the original language and reading books adapted to a particular level of knowledge, not to mention newspapers and general interest magazines.

- Practise : you can also practise a language by joining one of the conversation and language exchange groups in the night study rooms or the Catalan and foreign language reading clubs.

- Learn more: some libraries have special sections where you will find resources for gaining more in-depth knowledge of a language and its current context. Such as the Chinese Collection at the Fort Pienc - Ana María Moix Library, the Basque literature Collection at Esquerra de l’Eixample – Agustí Centelles Library, the Japanese literature Collection at Jaume Fuster Library, the Romani Collection at Les Roquetes - Rafa Juncadella Library and the Romanian literature Collection at Poblenou – Manuel Arranz Library.

You can use the interlibrary loan service if the book you need is at another library.

If you have any doubts, go to the information desk at your local library where staff will help you to find everything you need.
