Ten years ago, on 25 September, the 193 Member States of the United Nations approved the 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This global commitment reflects a desire to move towards a more just, sustainable and inclusive future. Having approved its endorsement of the Agenda in 2019, Barcelona is now consolidating this commitment by unveiling its fifth follow-up report on the 2030 Agenda for Barcelona (2024-2025). This monitoring tool tracks the progress and pace of achieving the 169 milestones linked to the SDGs.

The report takes a broad look at the economic, environmental, social and governance situation in the city and focuses on current major challenges, such as access to housing, water management, sustainable mobility, the climate emergency and reducing inequality.

This edition introduces a notable new feature in that the SDGs are grouped into topics, making it possible to link the indicators to the most relevant municipal actions and identify areas where efforts need to be intensified. The topics are urban planning and housing; public space and ecological transition; mobility and infrastructure; coexistence, citizenship and equality; economy and employment; social care and health; culture, education and sports; and metropolis and global projection.

The first chapters of the report focus on housing and water, with updated figures and clear targets for 2030, such as cutting down on evictions, expanding the social housing stock, and making sure domestic water consumption stays below 100 litres per person per day.

The report also emphasises the key role cities play in achieving the SDGs. Actions such as the Management Plan, the Neighbourhood Plan, the Living Plan and the Climate Plan have a cross-cutting impact on most of the goals.

The full report is available in Catalan on the website and will soon be available in Spanish and English. You can also download the digital monitoring application, which includes the latest data for each indicator. The Barcelona Dades website contains open, up-to-date information about the city, providing a broader overview.

Global commitment and local action for the SDGs

To keep up the commitment and step up action for the Sustainable Development Goals, the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) organisation and the United Nations have launched the “Cities Countdown to 2030” initiative, in which Barcelona is participating with its Climate Plan.

In addition, to mark the tenth anniversary of the 2030 Agenda, Barcelona Provincial Council and the towns in the province are joining in the celebrations with the campaign “Surt del cub. Actua!” (Think outside the box. Act!) and the publication of their first Local Voluntary Report, which highlights the local community’s commitment to the SDGs.
