The exhibition “¿Cuántos recuerdos guarda la memoria?”, by the photographer Jess Insfrán Pérez, is on until 31 January.

The exhibition “¿Cuántos recuerdos guarda la memoria?” [How many memories does the memory hold?], by the photographer Jess Insfrán Pérez, is on at the Barcelona LGBTI Centre until 31 January.

The Barcelona LGBTI Centre is hosting the exhibition “¿Cuántos recuerdos guarda la memoria?” [How many memories does the memory hold?] until 31 January, a project by the photographer and feminist activist Jess Insfrán Pérez which forms part of the cycle “Cartografies en fuga” [Cartographies on the run].

The display looks at different moments in the everyday life of Liz Paola Cortaza, a 63-year-old trans woman who survived the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner in Paraguay, which lasted from 1954 to 1989.

Trans people in Paraguay suffer multiple forms of discrimination and violence, such as a lack of access to the world of work, precariousness, stigmatisation and social rejection in a highly conservative and catholic context. Owing to these factors, the average life expectancy for a trans woman in Paraguay is 35. This is why Liz Paola is one of the longest-living trans women in the country.

Liz Paola Cortaza recently received the “Dignity” award by the Human Rights Coordinator of Paraguay for her work to preserve historical memory. She is currently fighting alongside other colleagues to gain legal recognition of her name.

The exhibition ¿Cuántos recuerdos guarda la memoria?” forms part of the activity cycle “Cartografies en fuga”, together with “Los muchos triángulos rosas” [The many pink triangles], by Luca Gaetano Pira, which offers first-hand accounts from LGBTI people who also survived military dictatorships in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and the Spanish state.

Both exhibitions have free admission and are open to the general public until 31 January, during the usual opening hours for the LGBTI Centre.
