A new edition of ‘Orwell Day’ arrives

Between 5 and 21 June there will be debates and itineraries to pay tribute to the writer and journalist and to discuss freedom of expression.

Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), together with Orwell Day Collective and in collaboration with PEN Català are once again organising ‘Orwell Day’, a programme of activities to pay tribute to George Orwell and update the debate on freedom of expression. It will take place between 5 and 21 June, and this year it comes just a few weeks after the unveiling of a plaque in memory of the journalist and writer.

In this edition, the investigative journalist Patrick Radden Keefe will commission the programme with a series of talks on the truth and the deterioration of the information sphere. Radden Keefe himself will open the series on 5 June with an inaugural lecture. Later, the Orwell Day committee will talk to journalists Tom Burgis (12 June) and Patricia Evangelista (19 June), in two separate sessions.  ‘Orwell Day’ will end with the Artists at Risk event, which celebrates the arts as a means of reclaiming human rights. It will take place on 20 and 21 June.

Literary routes through Orwell’s Barcelona

The planned programme also includes various literary routes to retrace Orwell’s steps, led by historians, photographers and writers who are experts in the book Homage to Catalonia. They will be held on 5, 7, 11, 11, 12, 13 and 18 June. All of them will last two hours and the meeting point will be Metro Drassanes, exit La Rambla. On the 18th, in addition to a route around Barcelona, there will also be a virtual route entitled ‘Orwell in Aragon’; through images and recordings, participants will be able to follow Orwell’s virtual itinerary in this region during the Civil War. It will begin at 6.30 p.m. and the activity will take place at CCCB.
