Call for Jan Michalski Foundation Residencies for Writers
The application forms for the year 2025 can be sent until 26th August this year.
The Jan Michalski Foundation has a group of seven different residential modules that are available to writers and translators who are invited for residencies of different lengths of time. The residencies offered by this foundation are open to all types of writing and all languages, although priority is given to literary writers and translators. The application period for next year’s literary residency is now open, and there is time to send in the completed application forms until 26 August 2024.
One of the differences with respect to the majority of residencies is that they can be for individuals or for pairs working on a common project. In addition, a percentage is reserved for authors who are dedicated to ‘nature writing’, a form of fiction or creative non-fiction that raises awareness of nature, prepares for a more sustainable future and helps to better understand socio-environmental interconnections and the impact of human actions on nature.
The residencies can have different durations, from two weeks to three months. The duration of the stay must coincide with the length of the project. There are no age or nationality restrictions and beginner to veteran authors are accepted. Applications will be assessed on the basis of three criteria: the literary quality of the project, the candidate’s professional career and whether or not the length of the stay coincides with the scope of the project. Applications from beginners are assessed on the basis of the quality of the project and the motivation they are able to convey in their application.
The costs of the residents’ travel to and from their homes will be paid by the Foundation. Residents receive a weekly allowance of 400 CHF (about 415 €). The Foundation offers lunch and dinner to the residents.
Location
The Jan Michalski Foundation is located at the foot of the Swiss Jura mountains in Montricher. The village is about 30 minutes from Lausanne and one hour from Geneva. Montricher can be reached by train from Morges.
Six ‘cabins’ in the residences overlook lake Geneva and the Alps, while a seventh faces the wooded slopes of the Jura. Another cabin serves as a kitchen and common living area where the resident writers can cook together, socialise and relax.
