Writers Adam Shatz and Pankaj Mishra discuss the legacy of Frantz Fanon

The meeting will take place at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) on the afternoon of 3 July.

Adam Shatz, writer and editor of The London Review of Books, will talk with the writer Pankaj Mishra about the complexity of the figure of the psychiatrist and revolutionary Frantz Fanon, based on the former’s book La clínica rebelde (The Rebel’s Clinic) (Debate, 2024). It will be held at the Mirador of CCCB on Wednesday 3 July from 6.30 p.m., with simultaneous translation English-Catalan.

In The Rebel’s Clinic, the biographer Adam Shatz manages to show how Fanon’s ideas on black identity, colonialism, mental health and violence were built in parallel to his personal experiences: from his participation in the Second World War to his experiences as a psychiatrist in colonial contexts and his involvement in the struggle for the liberation of Algeria.

Frantz Fanon is considered a pioneer of social theory in conceiving personal pathologies as political symptoms and defending that psychological suffering has its roots in social causes. His work has become essential for reflecting on contemporary colonialism and racism. Books such as The Wretched of the Earth or Black Skin, White Masks continue to shape social and anti-colonial movements around the world.

The event is part of the course “Ecos de Fanon”, organised by Institut d’Humanitats de Barcelona and given by Javier García Fernández.

Tickets to attend the dialogue are priced at €3 and can be purchased in advance.
