Barcelona is ready to host an America’s Cup like no other
In one month’s time, Barcelona will witness the start of the America’s Cup and become the first city in the world to have hosted the top three international sporting events: the America’s Cup, the Olympic Games and the Football World Cup.
On Tuesday 23 July, just one month before the start of the America’s Cup, Barcelona City Council gathered representatives of the city workers involved in organising the competition for an event called Tot a punt per a la Copa Amèrica [Ready for the America’s Cup].
The mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, presided over the event and stressed that the city was ‘ready to host the best, most open, innovative and sustainable America’s Cup in history, which will stand out thanks to the hallmarks of Barcelona’.
The mayor thanked the nearly 400 workers involved in this international sporting event for their hard work and dedication, emphasising that ‘the challenge is huge and it’s only possible with a wonderful team behind it, like the Barcelona City Council team’. Jaume Collboni also stated that ‘decision to choose Barcelona was spot on. We have managed to connect the city to the sea, and we want this event to leave a huge footprint on the city’.
The Municipal Institute of Information Technology, represented by the employees of the Directorate for City Innovation and Technologies, participated in the second panel at the event, where they talked about the importance of the work they spearheaded in rolling out the 5G network at the waterfront.
The Barcelona America’s Cup will begin on 22 August with the preliminary regattas. It is the third most watched sporting event in the world and the oldest sporting competition of the modern era, founded in 1851. The participating teams are: Emirates Team New Zealand, Ineos Britannia, Alinghi Xarxa Bull Racing, Lluna Rossa Prada Pirelli, NYYC American Magic and Orient Express Racing Team.
Preparations are under way for an open, highly participatory America’s Cup with an impressive cultural programme running alongside the sporting event. The opening ceremony is also set to take place on Bogatell beach on 10 October, kicking off the grand finale of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup, which will be contested from 12 to 27 October.
