The Municipal Institute of Information Technology (IMI) is carrying out a modernisation process that includes the migration of 170 municipal apps to a new access control system for apps and services known as IdP.

The project should be completed in 2025 and is designed to boost security by improving the control of access to corporate information, working with good tech practices and improving operational efficiency. The process will also help integrate market products and services and open up mobile access to corporate apps, which could pave the way for new apps to be created.

The new IdP represents a significant step forward in secure access for users of municipal apps and services. This technology allows for more secure authentication, managed centrally, which is crucial for protecting personal data and sensitive information in an increasingly digital environment.

A new app has also been developed to manage access authorisations in a more agile and practical way. This also brings benefits for those in charge of the City Council’s ICT services and apps, giving them greater control over who does what, resulting in better governance of access to information.

The new access control system also allows for advanced security policies to be implemented, such as multi-factor access and dynamic access management based on the user’s context, allowing for control of corporate apps in municipal infrastructures as well as those in the cloud.

The new system will facilitate more agile and secure integration with other technological platforms, whether internal or from third parties, which is essential for expanding and enriching the services that Barcelona offers its citizens. This capacity for integration is a key part of the IMI’s strategy to build a better-connected and more interactive digital ecosystem, which can be quickly adapted to new technological and security needs in the digital environment.

With this project, the IMI demonstrates a firm commitment to ongoing improvement and technological innovation, putting Barcelona at the forefront among cities that use technology to improve the everyday lives of their inhabitants and visitors.
