On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Editorial Planeta, the Full Council unanimously agreed to award the Barcelona publishing group the city’s Gold Medal for its commitment to promoting culture and contributing to Barcelona’s international standing in the sphere of literature.
The municipal government also valued the innovative character of the publishing group in terms of content, products and formats, as well as its promotion and marketing.
Editorial Planeta was founded by José Manuel Lara Hernández in Barcelona in 1949 and was the embryo of the Grup Planeta. It maintains its structure with its capital wholly owned by the family and has become a leader in the field of publishing, media and audiovisual education and entertainment, operating in over twenty countries.
With more than 70 publishing labels, Grup Planeta is present in the publishing market in Spain and Latin America, publishing over 2,500 new titles in Spanish, Catalan and Portuguese every year. The company’s commitment to talent and innovation also takes the form of the annual award of the Premi Planeta de Novel·la, created in 1952 and now a major literary event.
