Registration is now open for the putibarcelona trans* route on 18 March

01/03/2023 - 10:59

An activity as part of the “Our Bodies are Battlefields” programme.

This Wednesday, 1 March, we're opening registration for those who'd like to join us on the putibarcelona trans* route on Saturday 18 March, from 11 am to 1 pm. To book your place, please email inscripciones@centrelgtbibcn.org

Have you ever wondered about the history of sex workers in Barcelona and wanted to know more? With this route we invite you to trace the scars that centuries of persecution and clandestinity have left on the vibrant skin of the city.

The route starts out from Rambla del Born, exploring the secrets hidden behind the stone carassas that stand guard over the narrow streets of this neighbourhood, marked by the presence of sex workers and its proximity to the port of Barcelona.

The route takes us through narrow streets that are a reminder of the prostitutes’ stories of prohibition and also of resistance, in a narrative peppered with anecdotes, dates, legends and real events.

Leaving the neighbourhood, we’ll discover the marks on the marble of the doorways in Rambla de Santa Monica, and how this street was the site of one of the first demonstrations to be held in favour of LGBTI rights on record, long before Stonewall and the historic mobilisation of 1977.

You’ll also be looking back over the swings of the pendulum between legalisation and prohibition. And remembering how trans sex workers have inspired the works of many diverse artists, such as Jean Genet for example.

Your guide will be Violet Ferrer, a 44-year-old trans woman who is the embodiment of many of the stories she tells, relating them to her own experience and knowledge. Ferrer is a member of the Tirititranstranstrans theatre company, which seeks to raise awareness of issues around trans women’s rights, and combat prejudice through the performing arts.

Are you up for a ‘putivuelta’ with us?

Duration of the activity: 2 hours
Time: from 11 am to 1 pm
