Measures aimed at elderly people

With a view to raising awareness of time as a key factor for day-to-day well-being, various initiatives are being implemented for this section of the city’s population:

Training to reduce the digital gap.
Training to reduce the digital gap is a key activity in order to make new technologies more accessible to elderly people so that they are not isolated. This training empowers them, enables them to carry out certain procedures more efficiently and quickly, and allows them to be part of the digital society around them. Digital training is essential for facilitating virtual communication with other people.

This training is given in municipal centres for elderly people in small groups so as to provide more personalised support.

2. Elderly volunteers as trainers.
Barcelona City Council’s model for elderly people’s centres and other spaces is based on elderly people’s participation. Therefore, one of its pillars is the promotion of volunteering among elderly people (Elderly People’s Centre Improvement Plan 2007).

3. ‘Live and coexist’ programme
The programme consists of providing accommodation for students in the homes of older people who are experiencing loneliness or would like company. This is a way of promoting a caring, altruistic exchange based on different generations living together and facilitating highly enriching intergenerational knowledge.
