Uses of Time

This project is being promoted as a city-wide strategy to ensure that Barcelona’s schools have access to public space that can act as a meeting place for children and their families, as well as local residents. It is part of the Espais Escolars (School Spaces) programme, though it is currently operating independently.

Objectives:

• To improve environmental quality
• To improve comfort in the public space
• To improve road safety
• To improve visibility
• To involve school and local communities

The project, which now covers a third of the city’s schools and will continue to be rolled out, is hoped to have an impact on environmental indicators, health and well-being indicators, and on improving social interaction and children’s opportunities for play. The initial feedback from users has highlighted that families are spending more time in the spaces around the school.
