Report on Gender Inequalities in Health in Barcelona

This study analyses gender inequalities in health in Barcelona from a life course and intersectional perspective. It shows that health differences between women and men are mainly explained by the gender order, which assigns unequal roles and opportunities throughout life.

There are differences in health-related habits, health status, mortality, occupational and traffic accidents, and use of health services. Women experience more psychosocial distress, consume more psychotropic drugs, and suffer from greater job insecurity and lower pensions. Men have more occupational and traffic injuries and die more from external causes or cardiovascular disease.

Inequalities are also observed in the use of time: women devote more hours to domestic and care work, while men devote fewer.

Socioeconomic status and origin also influence these inequalities. The study concludes that intersectoral policies with a gender and intersectional perspective are needed.

Impacts of Time:

  • Raising awareness and knowledge about time use.
  • Promoting healthy time use.
