Archives of the present and the future
This seems to be a topic of reflection regarding the photograph archive of the present and of the future. The photographs of the exhibition come from private donations that the citizens have given to the municipal archives of the districts, and form part of what is considered analogue photography: glass plates, negatives, photographs on paper, albums, visitor cards, slides, etc. Today, however, analogue photography forms part of a past that has been displaced by the new means of digital reproduction, such as cameras and mobile phones, which invite you to take a large number of images which are stored on the devices themselves (or on computers, hard drives, the cloud, etc.). Many of these images are shared on social media, such as Instagram or Facebook, which has become an enormous virtual archive.
But what is the future for these photographs? Are we aware that the photographs that we take today are also a memory of the future? What will happen to all those images stored on devices, the cloud and hard drives that we share on social media? How will we manage this large volume of images that are not physical but rather digital in order to be able to continue building this collective memory in which the role of the citizen is fundamental? This topic is also a call and a request so that these new visual productions by amateur photographers, companies and associations will someday form part of the photographic collections of the municipal archives of the districts, when as a whole, or in part, they are of interest for the history of Barcelona.
