Barcelona is a festive city and among them is one of the most important dates, Carnival, which allows for a break in the established order of things, if only for a short time. The city becomes the carnival in places such as markets, schools, streets and squares. The parade, with its floats, is the climax of this collective festival which ends with the burial of the sardine. The costumes, because of their visibility and irreverence, have also been a tool of protest, as shown in the photographs of demonstrations demanding facilities and services in the neighbourhoods. In this case, the mask transcends carnival and becomes an element of political criticism and protest.
