Safety and prevention. Headed by Barcelona and Lyon, the European project aims to establish a common global and European culture for the local protection of public spaces against terrorist threats.

Barcelona is hosting the final conference in the European Secur’ cities project, which will be held at the Fundació Miró on 3 and 4 November. Key stakeholders in Barcelona’s public security and emergency sector will be taking part along with others from Lyon and other European cities. The goal is to exchange new practices and methodologies for protecting citizens and preserving public spaces.

Recent years have seen terrorist attacks and other critical incidents all across Europe, highlighting the need to rethink the design of the urban landscape to reduce the vulnerability of public space while being able to continue to safely hold events and large gatherings of people.

To this end, the European Commission created the Internal Security Fund Police (ISFP), which provides support for cities to strengthen security, recognising the essential role of local authorities in prevention and the protection of the population in the face of a terrorist threat.

Barcelona and Lyon gained ISFP funding in 2019 for the Secur’cities project, the goal being to improve protection in the face of critical incidents in public spaces hosting events or activities with large gatherings of people.

The three-year project had a budget of 2.78 million euros, 90% of which was provided by the European Commission through the ISFP.

As a prelude to the final Secur’cities conference, Barcelona City Council will be receiving the French delegation from Lyon in the Saló de Cròniques chamber at the City Hall this Wednesday.
