Safety and Prevention. The project recognises the role of local authorities when it comes to prevention and protection policies against terrorist threats and critical incidents.

The final conference in Europe’s Secur’cities project concluded on Friday, culminating over three years of work by Barcelona and Lyon, the two cities promoting the initiative. The process involved an exchange of methodologies, experiences and good practice to improve security in public spaces where large events are held or large numbers of people gather.

During the two-day conference at the Fundació Miró, participants discussed and highlighted the importance of analysing cities from the perspective of risk and designing necessary prevention and reaction measure to improve safety in public spaces, making it compatible with the welfare of citizens.

Representatives from Barcelona’s safety and prevention services took part, include the City Police, the Barcelona Fire Service and specialists from the Manager’s Office for Safety and Prevention at Barcelona City Council, plus representatives from other emergency services from Lyon and other European cities.

Secur’cities is a project funded through the Internal Security Found Police (ISPF), created by the European Commission, which supports cities which are strengthening security and recognises the role of local authorities when it comes to prevention and protection policies against terrorist threats and critical incidents.

The initiative was launched in 2019 with a budget of 2,884,753 euros, 90% of which came from the European fund. This project will help address some of the needs for improvement prevention and reaction in incidents with multiple victims.
