The Commission for Ecology, Urban Planning, Mobility and Housing has initially approved the Amendment to the General Metropolitan Plan to establish the fire station in the district of L’Eixample and reorganise the urban greenery around it. This change in urban planning will see the facility established in its definitive location, on the site where Av. Sarrià, C/ Comte d’Urgell and C/ Londres converge. The new location meets the needs of the corps in terms of getting around and responding within its area of service.
The start of the administrative process for this planning procedure comes within the major strategic agreement for the city, reached before the summer, unlocking the definitive location of the facility in L’Eixample after years in its temporary location at the Parc de Joan Miró.
With the site currently classified as “transformation to urban stock”, the agreement will allow part of it to be classified as “facility” so that the fire station can be established there, and another part to be classified as “commercial and tertiary uses”, privately owned and used to fund the operation, for offices and commercial uses.
Following the initial approval, a public scrutiny period of a month now begins and the agreement will be published in the BOPB before progressing to gain provisional and then final approval, which corresponds to the Government of Catalonia. Once the process is completed, a procedure will be needed to reparcel the site and redistribute the rights and duties between the parties involved. Because of this, work is due to start on the new fire station in 2028, with the facility to come into operation in 2030.
The new fire station will be on a facilities site of 2,360 square metres, with a total area of 4,300 square metres, and the building divided into a ground floor, a mezzanine floor and two upper floors.
