Barcelona Fire Service will be giving a demonstration this Saturday of how they cut people out of a vehicle, outside the MUHBA Oliva Artés at 12 noon. The technique is used by firefighters to create space and be able to free people trapped in a confined space, usually in a vehicle involved in a road accident.
The procedure requires training, dexterity and the right tools. The first task is to identify and control all the risks, such as possible spills or glass in the road.
The procedure is then carried out, with firefighters speaking to the victim throughout to keep them calm and explain the work step by step, minimising any injuries so as not to make them worse. With the tools needed to access the vehicle, and in coordination with a medical professional, the victim is then freed from the vehicle.
If you would like to know more about cutting people out of cars and all the techniques, tools and materials needed, come along to the MUHBA Oliva Artés this Saturday!
This display is linked to the exhibition “Protecting Barcelona. Firefighters and fire prevention 1833-2022”, which explains how fire prevention measures have been applied in the city from when the Barcelona Fire Service was created in 1833 through to the present day. The exhibition is on at the MUHBA Oliva Artés until 30 June.
