Safety and prevention. The project started last month and will conclude in 2025.

A delegation from Barcelona’s police corps are in Greece to take part in one of the working projects for this programme, the goal being to improve security and readiness in places of worship and at large religious gatherings.

The goals of this working project are to develop:

  • A dynamic interoperability platform for identifying vulnerabilities, proposing recommendations to mitigate them and suggesting specific threat scenarios in these types of religious gatherings.
  • Effective communication channels which get public and private stakeholders, religious congregations and other key communities involved.
  • Training plans and collaboration to strengthen the quality of the results of the project and established ties between religious authorities, security stakeholders and private tech providers.
  • A security awareness campaign as part of a European communication strategy to help the conclusions from the project reach the public.

This week’s sessions will focus on methods for identifying vulnerabilities in places of worship, with work to begin on a module of recommendations to mitigate risks through countermeasures and security measures.

The sessions include various practical workshops, meetings and visits to the cities of Thessaloniki and Athens.

The project runs until April 2025 and involves public and private bodies from eight countries, including Barcelona’s City Police.
