Safety and prevention. The City Police will intervene in cases where conduct disrupts coexistence or degrades public space.

City parks, squares and gardens are more prone to suffering the lack of respect for others shown by some people with dogs. The City Police have launched a week-long campaign to tackle uncivil attitudes of this type.

The overall goals of the campaign are to:

  • Raise public awareness about the need for respectful behaviour in connection to pets, particularly dogs.
  • Make owners aware of the importance of abiding by current regulations, particularly those specific to potentially dangerous dogs.
  • Check that dogs wear restrictive elements such as a collar, harness, lead, chain and/or muzzle.
  • Check the pet census and the identification of animals, particularly dogs (microchip implanted beneath the skin by a vet and/or tattoo).
  • Avoid the presence of pets in children’s parks or gardens used by children.
  • Enforce compliance with regulations relating to the presence of dogs on public transport.

Ultimately, this operation by the City Police will intervene in cases where conduct by people with pets represents a disruption to coexistence of the degradation of public space.

The by-law on the protection, ownership and sale of animals regulates the way people with pets engage with public space and provides the City Police with effective tools for tackling uncivil behaviour which could disrupt coexistence.
