Safety and prevention. The operation was launched in 2023 to identify, locate and detain the perpetrators of over 200 vandalism offences.

Along with the Mossos d’Esquadra and the Policia Nacional, the corps was involved in an operation which saw 21 people detained, 14 of them in Barcelona, for a large volume of graffiti on railway and metro trains and infrastructures, causing damage of over a million euros.

The operation came within the context of the Pla Endreça and has the main goal of ordering public space and responding to improvement needs in all spheres. One of the main areas of work is to strengthen coexistence and prevent anti-social attitudes, including graffiti and vandalism in public space, with improved coordination with the rest of the police corps and stronger fines for anti-social conduct.

To be able to prevent and penalise this type of vandalism, the City Police has stepped up its presence in public space as a dissuasive measure, as well as its coordination with cleaning services, within the context of the by-law on social behaviour. In all, there were 486 formal denouncements for graffiti in public space or on other elements last year, compared to 327 the year before. This means an increase of 48.6%. Fines also increased by 66% in 2023, from 300 to 500 euros, and can reach 600 euros if the infringement is on a heritage façade.
