New City Police speed enforcement campaign

05/08/2024 - 08:00 h

Safety and prevention. Speed is one of the most common contributing factors in road accidents.

The City Police are launching a special week-long speed enforcement operation today, focusing on behaviour that could endanger people on public roads due to speeding or driving too slowly.

As part of the operation, officers will be carrying out speed checks on ring roads and city streets with a higher rate of speeding accidents.

Specifically, the City Police operation will involve:

  • Units mobilised on 30 km/h roads, pedestrian priority areas and roads with curbless surfaces.
  • Various types of radar equipment.
  • Public awareness messages on information displays on the road network.

The campaign aims to reduce the number of accidents and casualties caused by speeding, which is one of the most common contributing factors in road accidents. According to the latest accident report, this factor was the third most important indirect cause of such accidents in 2023, although it was lower than in 2022.

Improving road safety is a strategic focus of the Urban Mobility Plan 2024, part of the Road Safety Strategy 2030, which aims to achieve zero fatalities by 2050.
