This City Police campaign will be stepping up enforcement action from Sunday, 12 May, to ensure compliance with the regulations for circulating with motorcycles and mopeds, as well as among drivers of other vehicles that may cause mopeds and motorcycles to have accidents.
The campaign will be paying special attention to the use of helmets by riders and passengers alike, as well as documentation for riders and vehicles. There will also be penalties for conduct relating to distractions of different types, inappropriate turns, not respecting traffic lights and any other ostensible form of reckless riding or driving.
The general aims of the operation are to ensure compliance with the conditions for the circulation of these types of vehicles, to cut the number of accidents and victims, and the severity of injuries sustained.
Motorcycle riders are the group most at risk of having traffic accidents on Barcelona’s roads. According to the latest accident figures, in 2023, almost half of those who lost their lives in road accidents in 2023 were moped or motorcycle riders (9 out of 20). This group was also the one which suffered the most serious injuries, among riders and passengers alike.
Road accident victims can be avoided, and so we need to raise awareness so that all parties can get more involved in achieving the goal of halving the number of deaths and serious injuries, as set out in the Road Safety Strategy 2030, with a view to reaching zero deaths by 2050.
