The projects chosen will be applied in the city and receive an overall sum of 200,000 euros. The challenge comes within the context of the Barcelona Innova Mobility Lab, which promotes pilot projects to improve mobility.
Barcelona City Council, in collaboration with the Commissioner’s Office for 2030 Agenda at BIT Habitat and Fira de Barcelona, and through the Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress, is launching an international challenge for companies, start-ups, universities and innovation centres to put forward urban solutions aimed at reducing the number of accidents involving motorcycles.
Barcelona is one of the cities in Europe with the biggest presence of motorbikes and mopeds, representing 33% of the total number of vehicles. Riders accounted for 86% of serious injuries in road accidents in the first half of 2022.
What does the challenge consist of? Projects can be geared towards resolving accident numbers through innovation in driving. In other words, solutions linked to people’s driving habits and to tech innovation.
Who is it aimed at? The challenge is aimed at companies, start-ups, universities, research centres, technology centres, associations and foundations, who have until 1 March to put forward their projects.
How much funding is there? Each winning proposal will get between 40,000 and 100,000 euros maximum, covering a maximum of 80% of the overall cost of the project. The total amount earmarked is 200,000 euros, to be shared between the winning projects.
What’s the calendar? The time frame for executing the chosen projects is 18 months, with the pilot stage to take at least six.
What are the assessment criteria? Projects must be applicable in a real environment in the short term and must define the area where they will be rolled out. They must also achieve quantifiable results in relation to the safety of motorcyclists and third parties which will endure in time. Scoring factors include the innovative and differentiating aspects of both the methodologies and resources used and their execution.
A committee of experts will assess the technical quality of the projects put forward and choose the winning solutions, which could be applied in Barcelona this year.
International projection: the projects will take part in the upcoming edition of Tomorrow.Mobility, to be held in November along with the Smart City Expo World Congress at Fira de Barcelona. The winners will be able to use a workspace at Fira de Barcelona and also have access to municipal data and advisory services.
Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility
The challenge has been launched within the context of the 2030 Agenda and the collaborative agreement signed in December by Barcelona City Council and the DGT to reduce motorbike accidents in the city. It forms part of the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility, promoted by BIT Habitat with the support of the Commissioner’s Office for 2030 Agenda. Its aim is to boost and facilitate pilot projects and new projects in smart and sustainable urban mobility, diversifying the city’s economy and consolidating Barcelona as southern Europe’s capital for innovation in mobility.
