Safety and prevention. The campaign gets under way and will run around the clock until Sunday.

A new campaign by the City Police gets under way today with the specific goals of protecting pedestrians, increasing road safety, reducing the risk of getting run over and shielding people on foot from any conduct which puts their safety at risk.

The campaign will run all week and places special attention on detecting and correcting infringements by drivers of different types of vehicles, including personal mobility vehicles, who put pedestrians in danger or cause situations which pose a safety risk.

In addition, in line with planning coordinated by the Catalan Traffic Service, the campaign will focus on the lack of respect for pedestrian crossings, infringements at pedestrian islands and prohibited traffic circulation on pavements. Specific monitoring will be made at pedestrianised areas, in areas where traffic uses and pedestrian uses combine and in pedestrian priority zones, in spaces with 30 km/h speed limits, pedestrian islands, superblocks and other spaces where people on foot have priority.

The last campaign of this type, which ran from 30 August to 5 September last year, concluded with a total of 996 formal denouncements made.

The most vulnerable group

Pedestrians involved in traffic accidents are one of the most vulnerable groups, given the severity of the injuries sustained. They represent 30.5% of serious injuries and 41.3% of deaths in the city, according to the analysis carried out as part of the last local road safety plan.

In this sense, cases of people getting run over represent the type of accident with the most injuries, as 29.4% of serious or fatal accidents are where pedestrians get run over.
