Safety and prevention. This campaign is part of the Road Safety Strategy 2030, which aims for zero fatalities by 2050.

The City Police are stepping up their enforcement of regulations this week relating to the proper use or non-use of passive safety features, for both drivers and passengers, including safety belts, helmets and child restraint systems (CRS).

The campaign aims to reduce both the number of victims and the severity of their injuries. Traffic accidents victims can be prevented, and the goal is to cut the number of serious injuries and fatalities by 50%, as outlined in the Road Safety Strategy 2030, with the ultimate target of zero fatalities by 2050.

For safety belts, the campaign will monitor their use by drivers and passengers, imposing fines for violations after checking that the belts are functioning properly.

Regarding motorbikes and scooters, fines will be imposed for not wearing an approved helmet as a passive safety device or for improper helmet use. Additionally, vehicles belonging to riders not wearing helmets will be immobilised. Note that the driver or rider is responsible for ensuring that passengers wear helmets.

For child restraint systems, checks will be made to ensure that children under 135 centimetres tall are using an approved system in accordance with current regulations.

Lastly, fines will also be imposed for infringements relating to driver and vehicle documentation.
