Safety and prevention. The building was originally the Machine Hall for the Barcelona Universal Expo of 1888.

Members of the public will be able to discover this space from Thursday, 23, to Saturday 25, May, located at C/ Wellington, 1, next to the Parc de la Ciutadella, with morning and afternoon tours available.

The figure tasked with the historical and architectural explanations for the one-hour tour was Joan Molet, doctor and tenured professor with the Department of History and Art at the University of Barcelona.

Designed by the architect Adrià Casademont, the building was originally the Machine Hall for the Universal Expo of 1888. After the exhibition, it was partially demolished and affected by the new road layout for C/ Wellington. Today the main façade and the rear section of the halls remain.

The activity is part of the new edition of Hidden Spaces, a project based on the promotion of historical heritage in the city, particularly little-known or not very accessible spaces, organised by 48H Open House. This year’s edition is devoted to buildings from the Universal Expo of 1888, with guided tours of the Parliament of Catalonia, La Cascada and the Umbracle in the Parc de la Ciutadella, the Castell dels Tres Dragons, the Arc de Triomf and others.

The Hidden Spaces tours are just one of over 180 activities for this year’s Architecture Weeks, which are on until 28 June. Besides guided tours, exhibitions, competitions, awards, talks, celebrations and many more activities are in store in all districts. You can find them here.
