Meeting with Ariel Palitz, former Nightlife Mayor for New York

30/11/2023 - 07:39 h

Safety and prevention. The goal was to share experiences on managing nightlife.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Mayor for Safety, Prevention, Coexistence and Internal Affairs, Albert Batlle, along with the Commissioner for Coexistance, Montserrat Surroca, and the Commissioner for Ciutat Vella, Ivan Pera.

The meeting included an explanation of how the City Council is drafting a nightlife coexistence plan to address social harmony at night from the perspective of prevention. The plan builds on the work done through the action plan for civic and safe nightlife, presented on 22 June 2022.

Actions the new plan seeks to address include:

  • Drafting joint responsibility protocols with the sectors for nightlife, tourism, restaurants and commerce.
  • Drafting a census of establishments that can sell alcohol at night (from 10 pm to 8 am) to make monitoring and enforcement easier.
  • Identifying and promoting access to toilets open to the public at night, as well as studying the possibility of increasing these.
  • Strengthening City Police units operating at night.

Palitz was appointed by the Mayor of New York at the time, Bill de Blasio, to direct the first office devoted to the city’s nightlife. The goal was to repair the relationship between the City Council, the nightlife sector and various communities. Palitz is known as a pioneer and ambassador for nightlife governance and for having designed solutions for various issues in this sphere.
