Cypress trees now being planted at the Laberint d’Horta

06/12/2025 - 10:06 h

The process is now under way to plant 2,211 cypress trees as part of the renovation project for the vegetation in the Parc del Laberint d’Horta. The project will regain a kilometre and a half of paths with cypress trees, the goal being to ensure its protection, conservation and sustainability. The work is being carried out with European Next Generation funds.

The project includes the entire renewal of cypress trees, with 2,211 new ones being planted, as well as the renewal of the paving to make it more permeable and the installation of a remotely managed sustainable drip watering system.

One of the most notable aspects of the project is the renewal of the drip watering system and improvement of the soil to make the most of water and use it more sustainably. Improvements will be introduced in the parterres so that they can conserve humidity suitably and gravel will be added in some areas to help water infiltrate the subsoil. A very precise watering system will be installed in terms of water usage, able to be regulated according to orientation, areas of shade and the state of the vegetation.

The work is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2026 and has a budget of 1.32 million euros, 75% of it covered by European Next Generation funding. The renewal of the cypress maze is included in the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan (PMI), part of the Pla Endreça.

The Laberint d’Horta

Conceived by Josep Mas Dordal in 1794 and designed by Domenico Bagutti around 1821, the maze is the most iconic part of this garden museum. It is a unique composition that combines vegetation and architecture, currently listed as an asset of local cultural interest (BCIL) and in the process of becoming an asset of national interest (BCIN).
