Extra protection for cleaning staff during the high temperatures
03/07/2025 - 12:49 h
The City Council has been in contact with the cleaning companies FCC, CLD, Valoriza and Urbaser to assess and expand the existing protocols for workers during periods with high temperatures, which are becoming more intense and increasingly common in Barcelona.
The measures agreed on include steps that were envisaged for temperatures above 37 degrees, in other words the orange alert stage, with these now to apply from 34 degrees (the yellow alert stage). Steps include more pauses for workers to stay hydrated, with a 5-minute pause for every hour of work during the hottest periods. The order of routes will also be changed so that cleaning teams cover areas with more shade during the hottest parts of the day.
In addition, during red alert stages, with extreme temperatures of 40 degrees, an agreement has been established to suspend the service carried out by cleaning staff on foot without a vehicle during the central part of the day.
Special attention will also be given to workers who are particularly vulnerable to the heat. In this respect, improvements will be made to health monitoring protocols, with more self-protection tools offered and jobs adapted where necessary.
