Plant me on the balcony
Spring has arrived which means it’s time for flowers. Time to enjoy nature in all its splendour: trees, grass at its greenest and plants in full bloom.
But we have to stay at home and can’t enjoy nature as we’d like to, so Barcelona City Council wants to bring nature to our homes. That is why 80,000 plants will be distributed, preferably with online purchases in the municipal markets, between April 28 and May 7 in stages throughout the markets.
Nearly 30 species of plants, such as daisies, begonias, petunias, rosemary and thyme have been grown and prepared so they can be planted across the city thanks to nursery owners and garden centres who have not been able to find an outlet for them in the current state of alert.
Parks and Gardens have decided to collect all these plants so they won’t go to waste and distribute them among the public so they can put them in their homes and help make the city greener. Especially in windows and on balconies, terraces or roof terraces.
Green brings us health and well-being, and increasing the amount of greenery in the city helps us to improve its environmental conditions and combat the effects of climate change. That’s why the City Council is working to increase the greenery in the urban environment, with measures such as the Plan to Promote Green Infrastructure. But the contribution of people who green their homes is also a key element in making this a greener city.

Which plants have we distributed?
You’ll find a list of all the plants that have been distributed around the markets on this document. You can identify yours there so you can read about its main characteristics and how to look after it.
How can you take care of it?
From the Centre de Formació del Laberint, the teacher Xavier Segalà offers you a little homespun advice on transplanting and taking care of these plants so they are well looked after and you can get the most out of them.
What if I don’t have plants at home?
For those of you who don’t have any plants or enough greenery at home, we recommend some videos and talks to help you make the most of what you have or turn your shopping green!

We would like to see a really green city by making the most of its buildings. And we think we can achieve this if everyone puts plants on their window ledges, balconies, terraces, patios or roof terraces. So we encourage you to take part in this initiative and send us a photograph of your green flat or house with the hashtag #PlantamAlBalcó.
May 22 is World Biodiversity Day. It would be fantastic to celebrate it with a Barcelona full of green balconies.
