International new rose competition

To mark the rose flowering season, Barcelona City Council is organising the Barcelona International New Rose Competition, which takes place in the Parc de Cervantes rose garden (all accesses closed except the Av. Diagonal, 712)

It is a world-renowned competition. The roses presented at it have been created by plant breeders by crossing existing rose species. These varieties have therefore never been marketed or seen by the public. A reserved area of the rose garden is home to the winning rosebushes from each edition.

2021 Edition

This year, the 21st edition of the competition will take place from 7 to 9 May 2021. Anyone can go to see the roses in the rose garden and vote for those that they consider to be the best.

For safety reasons, to avoid overcrowding and for social distancing purposes, if you want to visit the rose garden, you will need to sign up in advance. Visitors will be able to enjoy the rose garden in two-hour shifts from 10 am to 8 pm. Up to 500 people will be allowed per shift.

The Barcelona International New Rose Competition was founded in 2001 to promote the rose garden and raise its public profile, faithful to Barcelona’s rose tradition dating back to the early 20th century.

In addition to the Citizens’ Rose, there is an international jury and a standing committee composed of professionals from the world of gardening and rose bushes, as well as creators from other disciplines, and the members change every year.
