A new City Police campaign gets under way to tackle speeding

Safety and prevention. The campaign gets under way today and will operate around the clock until Sunday 18 April.

The last campaign of this type ran from 3 to 9 August last year and resulted in 2,538 formal denouncements for speeding.

The Local Road Safety Plan 2019-2022 is aimed at reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries from road accidents. One of its goals seeks to cut the number of accidents caused from excess speeds, for example through speed-check campaigns.

Besides reducing traffic accidents, the campaign launched today also seeks to cut the number or degree of injuries to possible victims. To this end, checks and denouncements will be made against all cases of driving at excessive or unsuitable speeds which pose, or potentially pose, a safety risk to anybody using public roads.

Speed checks will focus on city streets where speed-related accidents have occurred and in areas which specific problems have been identified in relation to speeds. Different radar systems and portable lasers are being used, with the campaign complemented by awareness messages on traffic information panels.

The campaign aims to detect offences where speeds exceed general or specific limits, and at the same time pays special attention to inappropriate speeds, particularly if they affect the safety of pedestrians. Mobile units will be operating in areas with 30 km/h limits, areas where pedestrians have priority and streets with curbless paving.

The campaign gets under way today and will run until Sunday 18 April.
