Campaign for increasing road safety for personal mobility vehicles

24/07/2023 - 14:48 h

Safety and prevention. The measure will be in force throughout the city from 24 to 30 July 2023.

The specific aim of this Guàrdia Urbana [City Police] measure is to monitor the proper use and circulation of personal mobility vehicles (PMVs). Drivers of other types of motor vehicles will be monitored for compliance with their obligations as will pedestrians for theirs towards PMV drivers.

Behaviour leading to dangerous traffic situations will be monitored, as will improper parking and driving distractions, with the focus on traffic violations endangering pedestrians’ lives, which will be reported.

As for traffic violations, the emphasis will be on all those involving failure to respect red traffic lightspedestrian paths with and without traffic lights, and the right of pedestrians to walk safely along pavements.

The campaign will pay special attention throughout the city, and especially along the coastline, to cycles with more than two wheels (with or without assisted pedalling) which provide an unlicensed passenger-transport service (C1-Rickshaws) for money.

Another of the campaign’s goals will be conducting administrative inspections of premises and establishments hiring out PMVs as an economic activity.

Regulations for using PMVs

Users of these types of vehicles must note, among other things, that:

  • PMVs are listed as vehicles and therefore prohibited from travelling along pavements or pedestrian areas.
  • PMVs must not in any case travel over the speed of 25 km/hour.
  • PMV drivers are prohibited from using headphones connected to sound receivers or players and from using mobile phone devices.
  • The minimum age for driving a PMV or cycle with more than two wheels is 16 (drivers transporting individuals with a standard device must be of majority age).
  • PMV drivers carrying out a commercial activity are legally required to take out a third-party liability insurance policy.
