The Comprehensive Maintenance Plan centres on an intensive renovation of different elements of public space. The actions planned come in addition to the usual maintenance. They include replacing half of the lifts in the mountain neighbourhoods, renewing different elements in 25 parks and gardens and repainting over a third of signage on the ground. Work will also be carried out so that all the lighting in the city can be managed remotely and to ensure a swift response to any sort of incident.
What actions are planned in the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan through the investment of 180 million euros in the districts?
- Parks and Gardens. Action in 25 parks and gardens in the city to change the watering system and make more efficient use of water, make improvements to paths and urban furniture and plant more native tree species that are more resistant to climate change. Work will also be done in 14% of the city’s dog areas, 17% of children’s play areas and 38% of sports circuits.
Some of the most notable actions will be carried out in the Parc de la Ciutadella, in the Parc del Clot, in Plaça d’Ángel Pestaña, around the Port Olímpic and in the green spaces in Av. Josep Tarradellas. - Paving and signage. Work will be carried out over a total surface space of 620,000 square metres, with 35% of signage on the ground to be repainted, particularly in bike lanes, areas around schools and at pedestrian crossings.
- Escalators and lifts. 56% of lifts in the mountain neighbourhoods will be renewed, most of them in the district of Nou Barris. 24 escalators which are more than 15 years old will also be renewed. Most of these actions will be carried out in the neighbourhood of El Carmel, in the district of Horta-Guinardó.
- Lighting. Work will be done so that 100% of lighting can be managed remotely, paying attention to switching lights on and off and regulating them. LED lighting will also be increased from the current 28% to reach 50%. Work will also cover 3,500 streetlamps in 174 city streets, such as C/ Comerç, Av. Roma and the spaces between the blocks of Trinitat Nova and La Guineueta.
- Traffic lights. 4,500 traffic lights will be upgraded, some 11% of all traffic lights in the city.
- Sewerage. In a move to make the city more resilient to the consequences of climate change, work will be carried out on 22 km of the sewerage and groundwater network, upgrading obsolete points and adding connections to residential blocks in the public housing network in neighbourhoods such as Guineueta and Ciutat Meridiana. New tanks and connections will be installed in the Parc de les Glòries and the Parc de Joan Miró to improve the volume of groundwater use.
- Overhead power lines and slopes. Overhead power lines will be shifted below ground in mountain neighbourhoods and slopes and embankments stabilised in the districts of Sants-Montjuïc, Horta-Guinardó, Sarrià – Sant Gervasi and Nou Barris.
Comprehensive Maintenance Plan: prevention and maintenance of public space
This project is part of the Pla Endreça, which has a budget of 435 million euros through until the end of 2026 to guarantee the excellence of public space, with three main goals:
- Swift repair of elements in public space.
- Planned renewal of elements when they reach the end of their useful life.
- Transformation and definition of new uses in spaces where there is an important need for renovation.
