Safety and prevention. The campaign is part of the special operation over Christmas, to celebrate the festive programme free of incidents.

In an effort to combat the dangers of drink-driving and drug-driving, the City Police are running a citywide enforcement campaign from today, 14 December, to next Friday, 22, as part of the municipal road safety plan.

The campaign will focus on infringements linked to driving or riding while over the legal alcohol limit or while under the influence of drugs, as well as other conduct that poses risks. Checks will consist of breathalyser and drug-driving tests for people riding bikes and mopeds, a particularly vulnerable group which has seen accident numbers rise in recent years.

The campaign is part of the special operation for Christmas, the main goals of which are to take care of people, keep transport flowing and keep the festive celebrations free of incidents.

Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a risk factor for accidents, and preventive checks are one of the most efficient ways of avoiding the circulation of drivers and riders potentially at risk of accidents. As set out in the Road Safety Strategy 2030, the goal is to halve the number of severe injuries and mortalities by this date, with a view to achieving zero mortalities by the year 2050.

The influence that alcohol and drugs have in terms of reckless driving was actually the main topic for the Barcelona Road Safety Forum, held two weeks ago. The issue was tackled from legal and policing perspectives, as well as social, institutional and health angles.
