The breathalyser and drug-testing campaign by the City Police gets under way

Safety and prevention. The campaign starts today and will run until 23 December, 24 hours a day.

The three campaigns carried out in 2020 involved a total of 6,508 drink-driving tests (with 362 positive) and 306 drug-driving tests (with 114 positive).

One of the main priorities for the City Police is to improve road safety in the city. A cultural change driving habits, circulation and the way people get around is needed to achieve this, bringing about greater compliance with basic traffic regulations and consequently a reduction in road accidents, above all the number of victims.

Conduct that causes risks needs to be controlled to achieve these goals. This includes drink-driving and drug-driving, so from today until Wednesday 23 December a campaign will be in place to carry out breathalyser and drug tests on drivers.

The checks will also focus on breathalyser and drug tests for riders of motorbikes and mopeds, given the high accident rate among this group. Riders are particularly vulnerable and accident figures for them have risen in recent years.

In this respect, the Local Road Safety Plan 2019-2022 sets out thirteen priority indicators for reducing accident figures. One of the goals of these indicators is to cut the number of positive breathalyser tests to 1% in random checks.

This is the fourth campaign of this type since February, in application of the measures in the local road safety plan and in line with coordinated planning by the Catalan Traffic Service with local police corps and regional traffic departments within the traffic division of the Catalan police (Mossos).

The Central Traffic Unit with the City Police will be complementing the campaign with speed checks and, given the situation caused by Covid-19, with surveillance and checks on compliance with the restrictions on the circulation of people and vehicles.
