Whether this is for reasons of need or for leisure, eating out is becoming increasing common. Statistics show that the average restaurant expenditure per person doubled between 1980 and 2002. And in 2015 it accounted for 8% of the family budget, which seems high if you consider that we only spend 15% on food and drink for home consumption (data provided by INE, the National Institute of Statistics, for Spain as a whole), which is much lower than what we used to spend on eating at home a few decades ago.
