International Archives Congress - ICA Barcelona 2025 - Knowing Pasts, Creating Futures

This October, Barcelona will host this itinerant congress. Over three days, more than 2,000 professionals from 110 countries will gather at the CCIB (Barcelona International Convention Centre) to discuss the concerns and projects of archives on a global scale. It is the most important event in the field of archives and records management.

This year, the congress is titled “Knowing Pasts, Creating Futures.”
The five thematic strands of the congress offer an approach to the role of archives in contemporary society: “Managing Memories, Preserving Identities,” “Conflict, Disaster and Displacement,” “Documents and Rights,” “Digital and Accessible,” and “The Future of Archives.”

Among the more than 100 scheduled activities, there are nine presentations featuring the Barcelona Municipal Archive.
Some address issues related to document processing and management—such as GeoExpedient BCN, the preservation of plastic media, AI tools, or the eOffices. Others have a thematic focus, such as the memory of minorities, peripheral urbanism, or the role of citizens in archives.

    Presented by Glòria Gimeno Vázquez and Joan Carles Tobajas González.

  • The documentary collections of the Municipal Institute of Housing and Rehabilitation of Barcelona.
    Recovery of the social history of families who lived in the Cases Barates del Bon Pastor, as part of the musealization project promoted by the MUHBA.

    Presented by Maria Fèlix Roncero Escudero from the Barcelona Municipal Archive, and Carmen Cazalla Ocaña and Aina Mercader Sbert from the Barcelona History Museum.
