Barcelona, City of Women Athletes

As part of 8 March, International Women's Day, the Barcelona City Council has launched the City of Women campaign to recognise and give a voice to all the women who have made and continue to make history.

The project consisted of creating a map of the Barcelona metro network, in which station names were replaced by those of famous women who, through their achievements, struggles, and efforts in many different fields, have left a lasting impact on the city’s shared history.

Regarding the world of sports, the map commemorates five great athletes from the Catalan scene: Alexia Putellas, the Captain of Football Club Barcelona in the First Division and the first woman in the world to win the Ballon d’Or twice in a row; Anna Maria Martínez, athlete, journalist, poet, painter, anti-fascist activist, and the first woman to join the board of Futbol Club Barcelona (1934); Encarna Sánchez or ‘La niña del gancho’ [The girl with the hook], player, referee, and the first basketball coach in Spain; Laia Palau, the former basketball player with the most international appearances in the history of the Spanish national team, with three European gold medals, three silver medals (including an Olympic one), and six bronze medals to her name; and Montserrat Tresserras, the first woman in the world to cross the English Channel in both directions and the first Spanish woman to cross the Strait of Gibraltar.

In conjunction with this initiative, the Barcelona Institute of Sports, under the slogan ‘Adding, creating, leading,’ has produced a video that showcases not only great female athletes but all those popular sportswomen who consistently participate and excel in various competitions.
